54 fines a reminder to drivers to carry their cards

In the past week, City enforcement agencies made 246 arrests and recorded 59 395 traffic and by-law offences. Traffic officers also issued 54 fines to motorists during a single operation as they could not provide a valid driver’s licence. The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 693 incidents over the weekend.
In the past week, Traffic officers recorded 49 687 offences for various traffic violations, executed 1 845 warrants and impounded 239 public transport vehicles.
Officers arrested 25 motorists, of which 19 were for driving under the influence of alcohol and six for other transgressions, such as a stolen vehicle, false documentation and assault of an officer.
During an operation in the Cape Town CBD on Friday, 25 July 2025, traffic officers recorded 164 transgressions - 54 were motorists who were not able to provide a driver’s licence. Officers also impounded 12 public transport vehicles.
‘It's quite alarming to realise how many people are driving without valid licences, or proof of a valid licence. It might seem of little consequence, but the fact is, officers are duty-bound to enforce the law. We face massive challenges with unlicenced drivers who are a danger to themselves and others. Presentation of that driving licence card is also the only way to prove that you are behind the wheel legally. So, let this serve as a reminder to us all to never leave home without your physical card - digital copies are not acceptable. If your card has been lost or stolen, keep proof of the new application on hand in the event that you are stopped,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
Metro Police officers arrested 67 suspects, which included 33 for the illegal possession of drugs. Officers also issued 2 977 fines during weekly patrols.
Law Enforcement officers arrested 154 suspects and issued 6 731 notices in the past week.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre recorded 1 693 incidents this weekend, including 636 medical calls, of which 123 were cases of assault. The centre also dispatched assistance to 41 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
Residents are reminded to report criminal activities by phoning the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700 from a cellphone and 107 from a landline.
